3 ἁμαρτωλός
ἁμαρτωλός, όν pert. to behavior or activity that does not measure up to standard moral or cultic expectations (being considered an outsider because of failure to conform to certain standards is a freq. semantic component. Persons engaged in certain occupations, e.g. herding and tanning, that jeopardized cultic purity, would be considered by some as ‘sinners’, a term tantamount to ‘outsider’. Non-Israelites were esp. considered out of bounds [cp. Ac 10:28 and s. b, below]).ⓐ as adj. 16 ἄμπυξ
ἄμπυξ, - υκοςGrammatical information: f. m.Meaning: `woman's diadem; horse's bit; rim of a wheel' (Il.)Dialectal forms: Myc. apuke \/ ampukei\/ in a context of horses' harnesses, anapuke \/ anampukes\/ of ἡνίαι, apukowoko \/ ampuk-worgos\/.Compounds: χρυσ-άμπυξ `with golden bit' (Il.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Generally considered as a root noun with ἀμ- = ἀνα- and - πυξ, to πύκα `thickly, solidly', πυκνός, and cognate with Av. pusā (IE *puḱā) `diadem'; Lidén Symb. phil. Danielsson 148ff.; Benveniste BSL 34, CR. 41 (with further Iranian forms, and as loans Toch. psuk `wreath' and Arm. psak `wreath, diadem etc.'). - However, Szemerényi, Gnomon 43, 1972, 655 points out that ἀνά would not fit the meaning; we would rather expect *ἀμφι-πυκ-. As this form would hardly give ἀμπυκ-, the etymology becomes doubtful. Already the notion `thick, solid' seems not fitting. Fur. 317 rejects the etym. because he connects the root with πτύσσω, but this cannot be considered certain. Szemerényi also doubts the connection with Iranian: "If really connected with Iranian pus-..." The etym. always struck me as unconvincing. A word like `ornament' is easily borrowed. If we analyse the word as ἀμπ-υκ-, we have a typical substr. suffix (Beekes in Bammesberger-Venneman 2003).Page in Frisk: 1,96Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἄμπυξ

17 λοιμός
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `pest, deathly plague' (A 61), metaph. `mischievous man' (D.), also in adj. function (LXX, christl. lit.); on the meaning Pfister PhW 60, 222ff..Derivatives: λοιμώδης `plague-like' (Hp., Th.), λοιμικός `belonging to the pest' (Hp., hell.; Chantraine Études 121), λοίμιος surn. of Apollon in Lindos (Macr.); λοιμότης `plague-like situation' (LXX); λοιμεύομαι `contaminated with the pest' (LXX), λοιμώσσω, - ώττω `suffer from the pest' (Gal., Luc.).Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Mostly taken as ablauting with λῑμός (s. v.). Also λοιγός has been considered as a root-cognate, and as a third suffixal variant was considered λοιτός λοιμός H. (Persson Stud. 15, Specht Ursprung 218, 226). Or a cross of λιμός and λοιγός; all desperate attempts. λοιτός is by Schmidt s.v. on good grounds taken as wrong for λοιγός (other suggestion in WP. 2, 402). - Diff. on λοιμός (to λείβω?) Wackernagel KZ 30, 295 (= Kl. Schr. 1, 658); diff. again Prellwitz s. v. (s. WP. 2, 388).Page in Frisk: 2,134-135Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λοιμός

Schwyzer 423). The connection with Skt. māyā f. `magic(image), illusion, deception' assuming an ablaut māi: mī (Schulze KZ 27, 425 = Kl. Schr. 53) must therefore be considered as a very remote possibility (the suggested ablaut does not exist). Further uncertain connections in WP. 2, 220; s. also μοῖτος. -- Lat. LW [loanword] mīmus `id.' (W.-Hofmann s.v.); Messap. LW [loanword] mimeteos (gen.) from μιμητής (Krahe IF 49, 268). - So no etymology; prob. 19 οἴομαι
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `to suspect, to expect, to think, to believe, to deem' (Od.); new presents: ὑπ-οίζεσθαι ὑπονοεῖν H., ὑπερ-οιάζομαι `to be arrogant, to be smug' (Phot., Suid.; also H.?).Other forms: ὀΐομαι (Hom.), οἶμαι (trag., Att.; cf. below), also act. 1. sg. ὀΐω, οἴω (Hom.), οἰῶ (Lac. in Ar. a.o., Bechtel Dial. 2, 351), aor. ὀΐσ(σ)ασθαι, ὀϊσθῆναι (ep.), οἰη-θῆναι (ion. att.), - σασθαι (Arat.; Wackernagel Unt. 183 n. 1), fut. οἰή-σομαι (Att.), - θήσομαι (Gal.).Compounds: Sometimes w. prefix, e.g. συν-.Derivatives: οἴη-σις f. (IA.), - μα n. (Plu., D. C.) `conceit, smugness, belief, opinion' with - ματίας m. `prig' (Ptol., H., Suid.), - τικός `arrogant' (Ph.); ἀν-ώϊσ-τος `unimagined, unthought-of' (ep. Φ 39), - τί adv. (δ 92).Origin: IE [Indo-European] [not] *h₃u̯is- `suppose, assume, have the opinion'Etymology: As original forms can be considered ὀΐομαι (ῑ), ὀΐω (ῑ and ῐ), with οἴομαι, οἴω as sentence-phonetic variants. From there arose in unstressed position the esp. as parenthetic form used οἶμαι with ipf. ᾤμην (Ar.) beside ᾠόμην (Schwyzer 280 a. 679 n. 7 with J. Schmidt KZ 38, 33; diff. Wackernagel KZ 30, 315 f. = Kl. Schr. 1, 678f., Brugmann IF 29, 229ff.). From ὀϊσθῆναι, ἀν-ώϊστος appears as basic form prob. *ὀϜίσ-ι̯ομαι, from where ὀ(Ϝ)ίομαι, *ὄ(Ϝ)ι̯ομαι \> οἴομαι (cf. Chantraine Gramm. hom. 1, 29; 371f.; 405, 407). -- Further unclear. By Kretschmer KZ 31, 455 a.o. (s. Bq and W.-Hofmann s. ōmen) as *ὀϜίσ-ι̯ομαι connected with Lat. ōmen `portent' (OLat. osmen) from *ou̯is-men. As however the nouns in - men are primary verbal derivations, this etymology is possible only on condition, that the disyllabic ou̯is-, which cannot be considered as verbal root, contains a prefix o-; this can be solved by assuming *h₃u̯is-, Beekes, Devel. 58. (Diff. on ōmen Porzig IF 42, 266). Thus Brugmann l. c. assumes a prefixal *ὀ-ίσ-ι̯ομαι, to Skt. ís-yati `set in quick movement' (s. on οἶμα); prop. meaning "come on something with my thinking", semantically rather uncertain. Similarly (to IE * eis- `move violently, push', but without prefix) Krogmann KZ 63, 131. -- An uncertain supposition on original impersonal use ( ὀΐεται μοι τ 312) in Debrunner Mus. Helv. 1, 43. 20 Νηρεύς
Νηρεύς, -έωςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: Sea-god, son of Pontos and Gaia (h. Ap. 319, Hes. Th. 233 a. 240).Other forms: Ion. - ῆος.Derivatives: Νηρεῖος in Νηρεῖα τέκνα = `fishes' (Euphro 8, 2) and Νήρειον, - άδιον = δελφίνιον, plantname (Ps.-Dsc.) [referring also to νηρόν `(fresh) water' (s.v.)? improbable. -- Besides Νηρηΐς, - εΐς, pl. - ίδες f. `Nereids, seanymphs' (Il.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As Νηρεύς has only relevance as father of the Nereiden (v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 219, Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 240) (in Hom. prob. mentioned as ἅλιος γέρων), we hould consider with Bosshardt 122, whether the father was called afters his daughters. He may also be indicated as Πρωτεύς (West ad Hes. Th. 233). As basis of Νηρη-(Ϝ)ίδ- also other stems have been considered beside Νηρεύς; cf. Schwyzer 465, Chantraine Form. 345 f. -- Fick 1, 503 referred to Lith. nérti `submerge', s. Fraenkel Sybaris 40 f., Wb. s. nérti 1. To be considered further νηρίδας τὰς κοίλας πέτρας and νηρόν τὸ ταπεινόν H.(?) -- Diff. Schulze Q. 475, Brugmann Sächs. Ges. Ber. 1899, 213: from *σνᾱϜερο- to νάω `well, stream'; noncommittal attempts. -- Cf. WP. 2, 693 f.; also Kretschmer Glotta 15, 64. An IE etymology seems hardly to be expected; as the ending suggests the word will be Pre-Greek.See also: s. νάω.Page in Frisk: 2,Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > Νηρεύς
